includes seven SAS Jeeps with drivers and passengers,
The Special Air Service (SAS) was established by David Sterling who personally led missions until his capture in 1943. Another colourful leader was Paddy Mayne, a former commando. During one raid, Mayne physically lifted a control panel out of a German plane with his bare hands when he ran out of explosives to use.
Initially, the SAS relied on the LRDG for transport, but it was David Sterling’s desire to eventually make them independent. In June 1942 he acquired the first Willys Jeeps for his unit and soon the SAS were off on their own, occasionally working with the LRDG during important combined raids.
The SAS jeep became iconic during the war in the desert. Sterling’s men were nothing if not resourceful and converted the jeep to handle the harsh desert. They installed radiator overflow tanks to recover lost coolants and removed sections from the radiator grill to open up airflow. The rest of the jeep was laden down with fuel, water, guns, and ammunition.
Each jeep was armed with obsolete twin Vickers “K” guns which were installed over the front of the jeep. Sterling also acquired some .50 cal anti-aircraft machine-guns, which added a serious amount of firepower to the patrol. Further Vickers were installed wherever they could be practically mounted.
Raids would usually include a small number of jeeps, but occasionally large raids would see over a dozen jeeps in operation.
The usual raid tactic was to drive in a column, two jeeps sideby side. The jeep’s gunner would face outward and open fire as the column sped down the length of the objective. Once they reached the end, the jeeps would turn around and hit the objective again before disappearing into the night and leaving chaos and havoc in their wake.
