The Renault FT-17 was the first tank to equip the Finnish Tank Corps after Finland purchased thirty two of these vehicles from France in 1919.
Fourteen of which were equipped with 37 Psv.K/18 main guns (the Finnish designation for the 37mm Puteaux SA-1837 SA-18 gun) and the remaining eighteen were armed with 8mm Hotchkiss machine-guns. The tanks armed with the 37mm gun were categorised as Koiras (or male) and those equipped with a machine-gun as Naaras (or female).
While the male version underwent very little modification through its service life, the Hotchkiss machine-guns of the female version were later replaced by an air-cooled Maxim M/09-31 machine-gun due to reliability issues and ammunition availability.
When the Finnish Army was mobilised in October 1939, the FT-17 was still in service. If only out of necessity, being the only operational tanks left in the Finnish arsenal.
The Finnish High Command at least had the sense to realise that sending them into battle would be suicidal; instead they were ordered to be dug-in in order to bolster defensive position along the Mannerheim Line.
